This conference offers an opportunity to come together to explore the topic of loneliness in palliative care, share learning, and network with others working in or connected to this field. The conference is open to both members and non-members and will explore the many dimensions of loneliness.

Loneliness is a significant yet often overlooked challenge in palliative care. More than the absence of company, loneliness is a deeply personal experience that can profoundly affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. It is estimated to affect over 90% of palliative care patients and 80% of carers, making it a critical issue for healthcare professionals and support services.

This conference will explore the many dimensions of loneliness, including:

• Social loneliness – arising from social isolation, a lack of regular social contact, and a shrinking physical and social network.
• Emotional loneliness – the painful absence of a close, intimate relationship or trusted confidant.
• Existential loneliness – a profound sense of inner emptiness and the feeling of being entirely alone in facing life’s ultimate questions, including mortality.
  

Bringing together researchers, clinicians, social workers, and practitioners, the conference will examine the impact of loneliness on patients, carers, and the professionals who support them. Through evidence-based presentations, discussion, and shared experience, participants will explore practical approaches to recognising, understanding, and alleviating loneliness across palliative and end-of-life care.
